Yes. The free plan includes 25 IDE projects and the free coding agent (on OpenRouter's free models). Paid plans start at $5/month for more storage. Schools and other institutions using Codevre with classes need an Educator plan. See Pricing.

In your browser, on your device. Static pages run in localhost:codevre; Node code runs in Nodepod. Codevre's servers only save and load projects and relay AI requests. See How Codevre works.

Not to write and run code. You need one to save projects, connect GitHub, and use the Agent.

Codevre's built-in preview for static sites, like VS Code's Live Server with DevTools. It isn't a real port on your machine. It's a tab in the Browser pane served from memory. See localhost:codevre.

Yes. npm install works with the public registry. Packages that need native binaries (sharp, sqlite3, bcrypt, puppeteer) can't run in a browser. See What works in Nodepod.

Can I import npm packages in a static page?

Not by bare name. VRE doesn't read node_modules or compile code. Import from a CDN (import confetti from 'https://esm.sh/canvas-confetti'), add an import map, or bundle with esbuild.

Does it support TypeScript and React?

Link to “Does it support TypeScript and React?”

The editor fully understands TypeScript and JSX. To run them, compile with a build step; the React template uses esbuild. Or load React from esm.sh with the Babel runner for quick experiments.

Not as a server or script in the terminal. In a web page you can use Brython (<script type="text/python">) or Pyodide from a CDN.

Only if the project is private. .env is an ordinary file: it's saved with the project, follows its visibility, and Nodepod's Git will commit it, because .gitignore isn't supported. See Tokens and secrets.

Can a project I open steal my GitHub access or API keys?

Link to “Can a project I open steal my GitHub access or API keys?”

No. Your AI keys are never sent to the runtime, and your GitHub token is attached only to Git commands you start from Source Control or type yourself. Project code, npm scripts, tasks and the Agent can't read either. See Security model.

Why does the IDE ask before running tasks?

Link to “Why does the IDE ask before running tasks?”

A project can run commands when it opens. Codevre asks you first, unless the commands only change folders and start the preview. See Tasks.

Can I work on a project in two tabs or with someone else?

Link to “Can I work on a project in two tabs or with someone else?”

Not at the same time. There's no live sync. Each save replaces the saved version, and Codevre warns you if the project was saved somewhere else since you opened it. To collaborate, use Git and GitHub, or share a public link so others can save their own copy.

Your edits are written to the in-browser runtime automatically. Saving to your Codevre account only happens when you press Ctrl+S (or click Save).

Can I use my desktop Git repository?

Link to “Can I use my desktop Git repository?”

Push it to GitHub and clone it in Codevre. Nodepod's Git uses its own storage format, so a .git folder can't be copied between Codevre and desktop Git.

Any model your key can reach on OpenRouter, Anthropic, OpenAI, Google Gemini or xAI. Agent mode needs a model with tool calling. See Providers and API keys.

Does the Agent see my whole project?

Link to “Does the Agent see my whole project?”

It sees the file list, package.json and your editor state, and reads files as it needs them. Whatever it reads is sent to your chosen AI provider as context.

Can teachers turn off the Agent?

Link to “Can teachers turn off the Agent?”

Yes. Teachers can turn off the Agent in the IDE for their classes. See the Teacher Handbook.

Does it work on Chromebooks?

Link to “Does it work on Chromebooks?”

Yes. Nothing to install. Performance depends on the device; big installs and builds are slower on low-end hardware.

Can I use VS Code settings and tasks?

Link to “Can I use VS Code settings and tasks?”

Mostly. .vscode/settings.json (Monaco editor.* options, files.exclude, Live Server keys) and .vscode/tasks.json (shell tasks, folderOpen, dependsOn) are read. VS Code extensions aren't supported.
