One provider is active at a time (ai.provider, default openrouter). You can save keys for several and switch whenever you like. A run keeps the provider it started with.

  1. Sign in to Codevre.
  2. Open the Agent and click the adjustments button, then Providers & API keys. Or go to Account ▸ AI assistant.
  3. Paste the key and click Save key.

You can also paste a key into the card that appears when you send a message without one. Save and retry saves it and sends your message.

Codevre trims spaces, quotes and a Bearer prefix from what you paste. It doesn't judge the format, because providers change their key formats. After saving, it checks the key with the provider and tells you if there's a problem. That check is advice only; the key stays saved either way.

Remove key deletes it from your account after you confirm.

  • Keys are saved to your Codevre account, one field per provider. Saving one never erases another.
  • When you send a message, your browser sends only the conversation to Codevre's AI endpoint. The server looks up your key and calls the provider. The key isn't part of the request your browser sends.
  • Your own signed-in session can read the saved key to show its status. It's displayed masked (sk-or-v1-…abcd) and never written to the page's local storage.
  • The key field isn't a password field, so password managers don't offer to save or autofill it.
  • Your keys are never sent to the Nodepod runtime or the preview, so your project's code can't read them.
  • One exception, for OpenRouter only: the key check calls openrouter.ai/api/v1/key directly from your browser. Other providers don't allow browser calls, so they're checked server-side.

Codevre doesn't sell keys or show them publicly. If you think a key was exposed, rotate it with the provider. See Tokens and secrets.

The model field in the composer shows the active provider's logo and model. Click the caret for:

  • Default (OpenRouter only): openrouter/free
  • Recent: up to 15 models per provider
  • Browse available models: search every model your key can reach
  • Type a model id…: any id the provider accepts

Your chosen model per provider is saved to your account (ai.openRouter.model, ai.anthropic.model, ai.openai.model, ai.gemini.model, ai.xai.model).

  • Batch-only models (ids ending in :batch) aren't supported.
  • Agent mode needs tool calling. Models without it are marked no tools.
  • Codevre has no local-model provider (such as Ollama). Use OpenRouter or a provider directly.

OpenRouter's Default (openrouter/free) picks a free model that supports what each request needs. You still need an OpenRouter key, but no credit. Free models change over time, some have rate limits, and they fail more often on long replies. Codevre retries automatically and suggests another model if they keep failing. Browse free OpenRouter models (opens in a new tab).

What is sent to the provider

When you use the Agent, the provider you chose receives what it needs to do the job:

  • Codevre's system instructions, the project name, the file list and package.json scripts and dependencies
  • your messages, attachments and selected text
  • the results of the Agent's tools: file contents it read, command output, console, network and DOM details, screenshots

What the provider does with that data is governed by its own terms and settings. Review them before working with sensitive code. See the Privacy Policy.

Inline completions use the same keys

Inline AI completions use the key for their provider (ai.monacopilot.provider, defaulting to the Agent's provider), through the same server-side lookup.
